Michelle Singletary Bus '93

Michelle Singletary is a personal finance columnist for The Washington Post. Her award-winning column, 'The Color of Money,' appears twice a week in dozens of newspapers across the country and is syndicated by The Washington Post News Service and Syndicate. She is a frequent contributor to NPR and regularly appears on CNN’s weekend editions of New Day, CNN Newsroom and “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.” She has also appeared on NBC’s “Today Show” and CBS’ “The Early Show.”

For two years, she hosted her own national television program, 'Singletary Says,' on TV One.

Singletary is the author of three books: 'The 21 Day Financial Fast: Your Path to Financial Peace and Freedom,' a perennial Amazon bestseller; 'Spend Well, Live Rich: How to Live Well With the Money You Have'”; and 'Your Money and Your Man: How You and Prince Charming Can Spend Well and Live Rich.' Her fourth book, 'What To Do With Your Money When Crisis Hits,' will be published in May 2021.

Through her column, books and media appearances, Singletary delivers advice on personal finance issues that range from lending your honey money (Don’t do it!), to raising money-smart kids (You can do it!), to the importance of getting out of debt, saving, and investing (You must do it!).

In 2020, The Washington Post celebrated her long and distinguished career at the paper with the Eugene Meyer Award, its highest journalistic honor. In 2019, Singletary was awarded the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing, the organization’s highest honor. She was also inducted into the Hall of Fame for the Society of Professional Journalists Washington, D.C., Pro Chapter. Fellow 2019 inductees included CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer and CBS News White House Correspondent Peter Maer.

Singletary is the director of Prosperity Partners Ministry, a financial program she founded at her church, First Baptist Church of Glenarden. Through the ministry she teaches on various financial topics. As part of this ministry, she and her husband also volunteer to teach financial literacy to prison inmates in various correctional facilities in Maryland.

Singletary graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park. She earned a master's degree in business and management from Johns Hopkins University.
